Frederic Dorr Steele

Frederic Dorr Steele was born in Eagle Mills, Michigan. He studied at the National Academy of Design. Steele worked for The Illustrated American in the late 1890s before becoming a freelance illustrator. He contributed to publications such as Scribner's Magazine, The Century Magazine, The American Magazine, McClure's, The New York Herald Tribune, Women's Home Companion, and Everybody's Magazine where he was the art editor during the first World War. Steele is best known for his illustrations of Sherlock Homes for the works of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
