Robert GoodnoughAmerican painter, 1917–2010

Robert Goodnough is considered one of the central figures of second generation Abstract Expressionism. Following studies at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts, he became deeply involved in the informal association of artists known as the New York School, which included Jackson Pollock, Adolf Gottlieb, and Robert Motherwell, among many others. Goodnough reacted against the style in the later 1950s and began incorporating his signature clusters of geometric shapes as a result of his interest in Cubism. From 1952, he created collage paintings based on the subject of dinosaurs, birds, and the human form.
