Hans KleiberGerman born, American painter, etcher and illustrator, 1887–1967

Born to Austrian parents in Cologne, Germany, Kleiber immigrated to the United States at the age of thirteen. In 1906 he settled in Wyoming where he joined the newly-formed National Forest Service, for which he worked for eighteen years. At 37 years of age he turned to art, teaching himself the practices of painting and printmaking from instruction manuals. As an artist specializing in depictions of nature, he was recognized by the Printmakers Society of California with a silver medal in 1931.
