Clawson Shakespeare HammittAmerican painter, 1857–1927

A Wilmington native, Hammitt studied with marine painter James Hamilton before attending the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he studied with Thomas Eakins and Thomas Anshutz, and traveling to Paris to study at the Académie Julian. In 1882 he opened what is said to be the first art school in Delaware, which he ran for more than 30 years. In 1893 he showed seven oil paintings in the Delaware Pavilion at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. He painted many portraits of distinguished Delawareans.
