Henry James SoulenAmerican illustrator, 1888–1965
Born Milwaukee 1888. Studied at Milwaukee Art Institute and Chicago Art Institute, and then two years with Howard Pyle. Worked for Curtis Publishing 1911-1940s, creating covers and illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, The Ladies' Home Journal, Delineator, and The Country Gentleman. Worked for National Geographic 1957-60. Exhibited throughout career, and taught at University of Maryland. Well-known for intense color as well as specializing in Asian subjects (viewed through American cultural lens), and for depictions of Palestine and Egypt for Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick's popular book "A Pilgrimage to Palestine." He died Charlestown, Pennsylvania 1965.
