Al HeldAmerican painter, 1928–2005

Al Held began his studies at the Art Students League and in 1949, went to Paris to study for three years at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Though Held remained committed to Abstract Expressionism, his style is characterized by a strong, linear vocabulary of geometric forms in vast, abstract space similar to hard-edge painting. He taught at Yale University from 1962 through 1980, influencing generations of painters.
