Clarence F. UnderwoodAmerican painter and illustrator, 1871–1929

Born in Jamestown, New York, Clarence Frederick Underwood (1871-1929) studied at the Art Students League in New York and the Academie Julian in Paris. He returned in 1901-1902 and began to specialize in illustrating postcards, books, and magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post. The "pretty girl," a favorite image since the prototype was made famous by Charles Dana Gibson in the 1890s, was a mainstay of many of his works.
