Joseph GrayEnglish landscapist and marine painter, 1890–1962

A British painter and etcher, Joseph Gray attended South Shields School of Art. His paintings and engravings were exhibited widely, including at both the Royal Academy and the Royal Scottish Academy as well as at international expositions in Florence and Stockholm. Gray travelled and sketched in Russia, Germany, Spain, France and Holland. During the First World War Joseph Gray served first in the Black Watch and then became a war artist for The Graphic. During the 1920s Gray took up etching and dry-point and in the decade 1925 - 1935 produced some 50 plates, mainly dry-points. The majority of his fine prints depict architectural or landscape views. Printed in signed editions of seventy-five impressions, they were published in London by Dickens.
