Charles Codman

Codman was a painter based in Portland, Maine. He apprenticed to the ornamental painter John Ritto Pennimans. He painted portraits and decorative elements, including signs, fire buckets, military standards, and fireboards. His skill at the newly popular genre of landscape painting attracted the attention of Boston critic John Neal, who praised Codman's work and encouraged him to produce and exhibit his landscape paintings. Codman's work is in many museums, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
