Frederick Dielman

Born in Hanover, Germany, Dielman came to the United States as a child. He graduated from Calvert College in Maryland and served as a topographer and draftsman in the United States Army Corps of Engineers from 1866 to 1872, before traveling to Munich to study art at the Royal Academy there. He then settled in New York, where he became a successful genre painter and illustrator. He was a founding member of the Society of American Artists and was elected to the National Academy of Design, where he eventually served as president. He taught at the College of the City of New York and Cooper Union.
