James Van Der Zee is famous for his stylish photographs of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s and 1930s. He began photographing as a teenager and operated a commercial studio in Harlem starting in 1916. His photographs chronicle the neighborhood's residents, as well as their weddings, funerals, and social events.
