Charles Wheeler LockeAmerican printmaker, 1899–1983
Best known for his depcitions of the city wharves and the urban scene, Locke was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and studied at the Mechanics Institute there. In 1921 he commenced study at the Art Students League in New York, where he worked with etcher Joseph Pennell, who hired him as an assistant. Locke later taught lithography at the Art Students League in New York. He exhibited nationally and was a member of the Society of American Etchers and the American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, as well as the Century Club.
