John Mackie Falconer

A close associate of Hudson River School painters Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, Falconer was best known for his etchings of old buildings and ruins. Falconer was born in Scotland and moved to the United States as a teenager. He began to experiment with etching in 1849 and dedicated himself to mastering the medium in 1866. He lived in Brooklyn and produced many images of New York, Boston, and the American South. He was a member of the New York Etching Club and a central figure in the arts community.
