Though little is known about Catherine Melton, her work is associated with Washington, D.C., where she studied at the Corcoran Gallery School of Art, and with her native Tennessee, whee she belonged to various artists' associations. In The Iris (the yearbook) for 1902, Melton is listed as the president of the Studio Club at Ward's Seminary. Ward's Seminary for Young Ladies was founded in 1865 by William E. Ward, a Presbyterian Minister and his wife, Eliza Hudson Ward, as a school for girls in Nashville, Tennessee.
