Murat Bernard "Chic" Young was born in Chicago, Illinois and grew up in St. Louis. Him and his siblings were encouraged to pursue their passions in the arts by their mother. After high school Chic returned to Chicago and worked as a stenographer and took night classes at the Art Institute of Chicago.
In the 1920s Chic began drawing a series of shorter lived comic strips about young women including The Affiars of Jane, Beautiful Bab, and Dumb Dora. He moved to New York City during this period and met and married his wife Athel Lindorff, a professional harpist.
In the summer of 1930 Chic created the comic strip Blondie which soon became the most popular comic in America. The strip was licenced for film, radio, television, and commercial products. Chic continued Blondie until his death in 1973.
