Wanda Gág

The daughter of an artist-photographer, Gág was raised in Minnesota in a household that encouraged creativity. She studied at the Saint Paul School of Art and the Minneapolis School of Art, before winning a scholarship to study at the Art Students League in New York. Within two years she was earning a living as a commercial illustrator and living in Greenwich Village. She balanced a vibrant career in illustration with writing for leftist publications and exhibiting at art galleries. She wrote and illustrated Millions of Cats (1928) which won a Newbery Honor Award.
