George T. MaxwellAmerican illustrator, 1890–1945

George T. Maxwell was an illustrator and cartoonist based for most of his life in the Wilmington/New Castle area of Delaware. Maxwell had a childhood interest in and talent for cartooning, going back to his grammer school days at the New Castle Armory. Beginning in 1912, Maxwell was a cartoonist for the Wilmington Sunday Star. From 1913-1919, in addition to his cartooning with the Sunday Star, he edited the Delaware State News, Dover, and covered the General Assembly for local Delaware papers. In 1919 Maxwell moved to Chicago to study cartooning at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts under the cartoonist Carey Orr. Maxwell returned to work in Wilmington until 1940 when he moved to Tucson, Arizona for his health. During the second World War he worked for the Arizona Daily Star and in 1946 began work for the Sunday edition of the San Francisco Examiner. By 1951 Maxwell returned to Arizona to work for the Arizona Republic in Pheonix. Maxwell's illness led to several eye surgeries and caused him to become nearly blind, but he continued to write editorials until several years before his death in 1965.
