William Ernest ChapmanAmerican artist and illustrator, 1864–1945

Born in Lyttelton, near Christchurch, New Zealand, Chapman was exhibiting paintings in New York by 1895. He became a noted portraitst. He married children's book author Mary Blackwell Sterling and illustrated some of her books. They lived in the New York suburbs for much of their lives. The Chapmans enjoyed traveling, and he produced and exhibited landscapes from his travels to Florida and North Africa.
