Martin Petersen

For more than 50 years, Petersen produced anatomical drawings for the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. He also taught anatomy at the National Academy of Design and exhibited prize-winning prints and watercolors. Born in Denmark, Petersen became a merchant seaman as a teenager, settling in the US in the 1880s. Petersen lost his left arm in an accident while working at a sugar plant. In 1889 he began his studies at the National Academy of Design. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society and the Society of American Etchers and his work was purchased by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Library of Congress.
