Betty Waldo ParishAmerican printmaker and painter, 1910–1986
Painter, lithographer, and educator Betty Waldo Parish was born in Cologne, Germany. Her art studies included the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Art Students League in New York with Kenneth Hays Miller and John Sloan, and the Academie Julian in Paris. Best known for her woodcuts and wood engravings, Parish is widely credited with fostering renewed interest in wood engraving as an art form; she exhibited widely during her career and received numerous awards. Her work is found in many institutional collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Library of Congress, Washington; the British Museum, London; and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia. Parish died in New York City.
