Jacob KainenAmerican painter and printmaker, 1909–2001

A painter and printmaker, Kainen was also a curator, helping to build the print collections at the Smithsonian Institution. Early in his career, he worked in a Social Realist style and moved between abstract expressionism and realist modes in his later career.

His work is represented in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Yale University Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among other public and private collections.
