Ruth ChaneyAmerican artist and printmaker, 1908–1973

Ruth Chaney (1908–1973) was a WPA Federal Art Project artist who specialized in screen printing. She led a subway art division, creating durable works for public transit, and exhibited at MoMA in 1938 and 1940. Trained in silk screen techniques by Anthony Velonis, she became known for her strong use of color and efficient stencil methods. Her notable works include Elevated, Girl in Grey, and Evening. Chaney received a MacDowell fellowship in 1942, and her work is held in major museums such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, MoMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art among others.
