Michael Ponce de LeónAmerican painter and printmaker, 1922–2006
Born July 4, 1922 in Miami, Florida, American printmaker and painter, Michael Ponce de Leon, began his artistic education at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and the University of Mexico City. After serving in World War II with the United States Air Force, he moved to New York City and studied at the Art Students League of New York, the National Academy of Design, and the School of the Brooklyn Museum.
In 1966, de Leon showcased his work in a solo exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery. The following year he received a Guggenheim Fellowship. From 1953 through 1980, he instructed art courses at numerous institutions including, Cooper Union, Hunter College, and Columbia University.
On January 23, 2006, he passed away in Mexico.
