Herman "Kofi" Bailey

Bailey was born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles. He studied at Alabama State College and Howard University, and received his MFA from University of Southern California. In the mid-1960s, he lived in Ghana and served as an art teacher and artist-in-residence for President Kwame Nkrumah. His art demonstrates his engagement with Pan-Africanism, and he went by "Kofi X." In 1967 he was an artist-in-residence at Spelman College, and he spent much of his later life in Atlanta.

He is best known for figure drawings in charcoal and conte crayon. His commitment to civil rights and social justice is reflected in memorable posters for SNCC and SCLC.
