Eldzier CortorAmerican artist and printmaker, 1916–2015

Eldzier Cortor is a celebrated painter and printmaker who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and was an active member of the African American art community in Chicago’s South Side. He helped establish the SouthSide Community Art Center. Cortor is well known for his powerful, surrealist depictions of the female figure, often nude, in dynamic compositions and surreal environments. He traveled extensively to the Caribbean and spent time in the sea islands off South Carolina painting the Gullah people.
