Edmund M. Ashe

Edmund Marion Ashe began his professional career as an illustrator for Scribner’s, Harper’s, Collier’s and Century magazine. Born in Staten Island, New York in 1867, Ashe attended the Metropolitan Museum Art School studying under John Stimson and at the Art Students League under Charles Vanderhoof. He was assigned to cover the White House during the administrations of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Ashe illustrated children’s books with drawings and paintings, and produced watercolors that resemble the “Gibson Girl”. He also taught at the Art Students League and at William Merritt Chase’s New York School.
