George Henry BoughtonAmerican painter, illustrator, 1833–1905

During his childhood, George Henry Boughton's family emigrated from England to Albany, New York, where his initial artistic influences were that of the Hudson River School of landscape painting. He subsequently studied in England and returned to the United States and exhibited his work; by 1861 he established his permanent studio in London. He retained his interest in the United States, and his genre paintings of American historical scenes and illustrations of American literature were particularly popular. He also produced a number of paintings of young women in outdoor settings.
