Label TextThis drawing has an inscription on the reverse, giving the date "August 1896." Stanley Arthurs studied with Wilmington artist Clawson Hammitt in Wilmington, who judged him ready to attend Howard Pyle's illustration class at Drexel Institute. Arthurs joined the class in 1897, so this drawing would have been done before his enrollment, perhaps during his studies with Clawson Hammitt.

Donor Marjorie Virdin (1899-1978) was a Delaware newspaperwoman, on the staff of the Delaware Coast Press and The Delawarean. She was also active in the Rehoboth Art League.
