Label TextThis drawing has an inscription on the reverse, giving the date "May 1897." Stanley Arthurs studied with Wilmington artist Clawson Hammitt, who urged him to attend Howard Pyle's illustration class at Drexel Institute. Arthurs joined the class in 1897, so this drawing would have been done just before his enrollment, or perhaps as an assignment from Pyle.

Donor Marjorie Virdin (1899-1978) was a Delaware newspaperwoman, on the staff of the Delaware Coast Press and The Delawarean. She was also active in the Rehoboth Art League.
