Label TextAn example of this etching was exhibited in the revolutionary Armory Show of 1913 which succeeded landmark exhibitions mounted by The Eight (1908) and the Society of Independent Artists (1910), groups in which Sloan played a leadership role.

Sloan confessed that he put his "little peeper instinct" to work in the creation of this etching. As he was planning this print he said, "The subject of the plate is one which I have had in mind - night, the roofs back of [our apartment] - a girl in deshabille at a window and a man on the roof smoking his pipe and taking in the charms while at the window below him his wife is busy hanging out his washed linen."
