Label TextDuring his early career as a newspaper illustrator at the turn of the 20th century, John Sloan illustrated social activities, such as the Ladies' Championship Lawn Tennis Tournament at Wissahickon Heights near Philadelphia.

Sloan's inscriptions on this drawing indicate that this was his first "poster style" newspaper illustration, which it was, and that it appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer in February of 1892, but the artist is mistaken about the date. In fact, it appeared in the Inquirer on June 13, 1894.
