Label TextImpressionism had a major impact on American painting in the early 1890s. Many artists, including Sloan's friend Robert Henri and Pennsylvania Academy instructor Robert Vonnoh, returned from study in Europe working with the lighter palette and loose brushwork characteristic of the movement. Sloan's own experimentation was brief: according to his inscription on the stretcher of this painting, this was his only foray into Impressionism.
