Label TextMany prestigious American artists received commissions to create murals in newly-built Federal buildings from the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, which sought to sponsor art "of the best quality available." Like many New Deal murals created for U.S. Post Offices, John Sloan's still-extant mural cycle designed for the Bronxville, New York Post Office celebrates the historic role of the postal service at the center of American communities and commerce.
