Label TextIn 1781, George Washington's troops defeated the British in Yorktown, Virginia. Here, Pyle depicts a night scene as American militiamen storm over a hill to attack the enemy. At the moment of confrontation, the British wear their formal redcoat uniforms and carry polished arms; both the Americans' uniforms and weapons are largely makeshift. At the apex of the chaotic battle, the American commander—both terror and determination in his eyes as shells explode next to his tricorn hat—urges his troops forward during this last major land battle of the Revolutionary War.
