Label TextN. C. Wyeth's first art training was at the school of illustrator Eric Pape in his native Massachusetts. In 1902, he began studies with Howard Pyle at the Wilmington studio
depicted here. Just four months later at the age of 20, he published a cover on The Saturday Evening Post, one of the country's most popular weekly magazines. By 1911, he had illustrated for at least 15 periodicals, including the leaders Century, Harper's and Scribner's. In that year, Scribner's art editor Joseph Chapin commissioned him for a new edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, referring to Wyeth as the next "preeminent illustrator of the day."
