Label TextEducated at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under the tutelage of Thomas Eakins (1844–1916) and highly decorated at the French academic Salons, Henry Ossawa Tanner became the first internationally renowned African American artist. As a specialist in religious paintings, Tanner’s approach to Orientalism—the interpretation of Near Eastern cultures viewed from a Western perspective—regards the locales and natives of the Holy Land and Middle East that he experienced at the turn of the 20th century as authentic source material for biblical imagery. Tanner most likely made this etching following a 1912 trip to Morocco during which he was accompanied by English painter-printmaker Annie L. Simpson, a fellow member of an art colony in Étaples, France where Tanner lived and worked for many years. [KEG]
