Label TextThe physical culture movement swept the nation in the late nineteenth century, and Americans were encouraged to exercise for health and pleasure. Cycling, skating, sailing and other outdoor sports were promoted as wholesome activities. One outgrowth of this trend was the proliferation of magazines dedicated to physical activities and enjoyment of the outdoors, such as Outing, Bearings, and Recreation. Their publishers employed poster artists to devise attractive visual messages targeted physical culture enthusiasts.
