Label TextIn this story, Rose (nicknamed Smiles) is a young woman who grew up in the Cumberland Mountains. Later she lives near Boston, where she is rescued from a storm at sea after she has heroically saved a drowning child. In this scene, H. Weston Taylor hints at a romantic encounter, highlighting Smiles' face in the moonlight and the stalwart stance of the man embracing her. The Ohio Teacher recommended the book for young people as "a charming story," praising Smiles' development into a "serious-minded" young woman.
