Label TextConsidering the precision of the outlined forms and the lack of sketchiness or hesitation, it is possible this drawing was made with the assistance of a camera lucida or another drawing aid. Patented in 1807, the camera lucida is a portable optical device that reflects an image onto a drawing surface, allowing the artist to duplicate the scene before him by "tracing" the image on the paper. The camera lucida was particularly helpful in rendering perspective, an important element of this composition.Fred Comegys
