Label TextRachel Whiteread's work provides a contemporary interpretation of the land and its use from an urban perspective. These four images are from a larger series titled Demolished, in which Whiteread documents the demolition of high-rise, low-income housing during the years of Margaret Thatcher's conservative government. Whiteread's images are to a certain extent testimony to the return of the urban landscape to its (semi-) pastoral form-but, at the expense of the (previous) inhabitants of the housing, which has been destroyed.
