Label TextThis drawing illustrates the site of the Sabine farm given to the Roman poet Horace by his patron Maecenas. The picturesque estate between Rome and Tivoli was contemptuously described as a "lizard's hole" by some of Horace's fellow satirists. The drawing was produced to illustrate an article by the artist's wife Elizabeth Pennell in the Illustrated London News.
