Label TextThis scene - designed by Henry Soulen in his signature brilliant colors -- was probably created for a magazine cover. A young woman seems about to use the trick of handkerchief-dropping, hoping to captivate the handsome driver of a horse-drawn carriage, even though her less attractive escort has a more modern form of transportation and the costume to match. This would have been a nostalgic theme for Soulen, who began his career in 1912, when the automobile was well-established, despite the continued use of the horse and buggy in some rural areas.
