Label TextDuring World War I, the American Red Cross staged fund-raising campaigns, using posters to communicate their message of need. The Red Cross "service flag" was a transparent sheet of paper with the Red Cross emblem given to all members for display in their windows. This was Jessie Willcox Smith's only war poster. The child in the window is typical of the children she had already won fame for depicting in books and advertisements.Jessie Willcox Smith
