Label TextSloan's earliest paintings were mostly portraits of his friends and acquaintances in Philadelphia. Working under the influence of Robert Henri, Sloan painted his friend William Glackens with a loose brushwork and a limited palette. In this early effort, Sloan captured his friend's eyes successfully, but struggled with the jawline.
