Label TextOne of the reasons Rembrandt’s etchings becameso well known in the 19th century is because
posthumous prints were produced from the artist’s
plates long after his death. These etchings were
known as “restrikes.” In this self-portrait—a
restrike—Rembrandt highlights the juxtaposition of
light and dark. The interior is almost entirely black,
an effect created with tight crosshatching. The artist’s
face is illuminated by the window, a bright sunny day
suggested by the nearly blank ground.
