While Henry Raleigh gained fame as an illustrator of high society themes, his early work as a newspaper artist acquainted him with scenes of urban poverty and down-and-out characters. His first job was on the (San Frarncisco) Bulletin as an artist-reporter. Once in New York, he branched out into magazine illustration and advertising art.
