Label TextBeginning in 1973, New York photographer Neal Slavin set out to capture what he felt was an intrinsic part of America, the group. In a straightforward, documentary fashion, Slavin produced a body of portraits which he felt revealed the "desire to belong in America in the mid 1970s and the conflicts caused by that wish." He allowed groups to pose themselves, because he believed "no outsider knows the status and rank of each individual as well as the membership does."Nina Katchadourian
