Label TextMeryon originally sketched this example of naval draughtsmanship during his military career on a South Pacific voyage in 1845. Almost two decades later, as an established artist in Paris, he made the etching. In this state of the print, he had not yet corrected the misspelling of île (isle) in the title. In the 1850’s Meryon published Twenty-two Views of Paris, often considered a turning point in the revival of etching as artistic expression.
