Label TextA Boston-based painter, Maurice Prendergast was friends with Arthur B. Davies and had met Henri and Glackens in 1896 when they had all been in Paris. Beginning in 1900, he exhibited at Macbeth Gallery and spent time in New York each year to keep up on developments in the art world. On one such visit, he renewed his friendship with Henri and Glackens and painted alongside them by the East River and in Central Park. Although his style was very different, like the other members of the Eight, his work was often rejected by academic jurors. His direct gaze, and jutting elbow--like his highly individual and critically divisive painting style--seem to welcome a spirited challenge.
