Label TextEach spring in New York the National Academy of Design hosted a large juried exhibition. Like the Salons in Paris, these annual displays provided a showcase for American artists. It was important to an artist's career to have work accepted and hung in clear view at these major exhibitions. However, the National Academy was a conservative institution and many younger artists saw their works rejected or "skied," hung so high that it was difficult to see.
